YES, eating a healthy diet is a good idea for the couples planning to become pregnant. Researchers from Harvard have published a review of past studies that examined the impact of diet on fertility and found that for women trying to become pregnant naturally, certain vitamins and nutrients were linked to positive effects on fertility, viz- folic acid, vitamin B12 ,omega-3 fatty acids etc. On the other hand, antioxidants, vitamin D, dairy products, soy, caffeine, and alcohol appeared to have little or no effect on fertility.
Healthy diet affects the fertility mainly by –
Healthy ovulation – Balanced diet helps in maintaining adequate hormonal function in the body, which is essential for successful ovulation. A poor diet can lead to excess insulin which interfere with maturation of eggs in ovary.
Healthy weight – Overweight/Obesity reduces the chances to get pregnant by effecting the quality of eggs and sperms. Obesity also increases the risk of miscarriage and other pregnancy complications.
