Polycystic ovary is an endocrine and reproductive disorder, defined by high level of androgen testosterone (male sex hormones) & Insulin levels which interferes with the growth & release of eggs from the ovaries. It may lead to no ovulation and/or irregular menstrual cycle that effects fertility. The condition can be genetic and gets aggravated by lifestyle issues that precipitate Insulin resistance and weight gain. Lifestyle modification along with medical management is required to treat the known cause, by focusing on diet and regular physical activity that ensures better hormonal regulation & weight loss, thus breaking the vicious cycle and preparing the uterus to conceive.
The linking of PCOD and fertility is defined by the hormones (androgen, progesterone, estrogen, LH and FSH), as they decide the sexual derive & ovulation which in turn responsible for conceiving. Females with overweight and PCOD generally have high level of LH and Insulin hormones thereby having high level of testosterone (male sex hormone) and responsible for no or delays egg release, hence disturb the fertility window. It’s become very important to manage hormones to manage PCOD which can be achieved by reducing stress levels, anxiety & weight with the help of having improved nutritional status and regular exercises.
Several Studies suggested that every woman should adopt a weight control nutritious diet along with regular exercise/yogas which helps to regulate ovulation and makes you to conceive faster. Since PCOD is characterised by hormonal imbalance (Sexual hormones and Insulin), adopting a diet having foods with low Glycemic index with high Fibers content helps to control insulin level whereas regular Yoga Assans or exercise helps to lower down stress hormone (like Cortisol) and testosterone levels by excreting from the body via urine, increases blood flow and sends positive signals to brain to control other sexual and stress hormones.
