As a mother, you want the best for your baby, especially health wise. So, you would try very hard to make sure that you are doing the right thing. It is easy to come across so many misleading opinions, which may not even be accurate and can be harmful instead. Here are a few myths that this article is going to debunk.
Myth: “Beta, you have to eat for two now.”
Fact: Aise kaise? Although nutrient requirement increases, it does not double. It just increases by a few hundred calories. Over eating is an unhealthy practice for both of you.
Myth: “Kesar gives fair complexion to the child.”
Fact: Nope. Genes determine the complexion of the child. Also, it doesn’t matter. It’s the 21st century.
Myth: “Consume food rich in fat as it keeps the baby healthy.”
Fact: Fat is important, but should be consumed in a certain limit. Excess fat can cause problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc. I know that food rich in fat is delicious, but what can we do?
Myth: “You should not have fish.”
Fact: Arre! Fish is good for your health. It has so many nutrients like protein, iron and Vitamin D. However, avoid salt water fish such as swordfish and mackerel. Stick to salmon and tilapia instead.
Myth: “Pregnant women should not exercise.”
Fact: Moderate exercise is perfectly fine for you. It can also help to prepare for delivery and keeps you fit. It also freshens the mind. So, get up and get to it! But don’t try to be a gymnast either. Do simple ones such as neck and shoulder rotation.
Myth: “Eating butter and ghee and make delivery easier.”
Fact: These two are only a way to express maa ka pyaar and can be unhealthy. Eating these foods has absolutely no effect on delivery. It solely depends on your body. Again, fats are helpful, only when consumed in the required quantity.
Myth: “Drink less water to avoid frequent trips to the washroom and water retention.”
Fact: Paani ka kaam paani hi karta hai. Water is absolutely necessary for both of you because it helps deliver nutrients to the baby. It also keeps you hydrated.
Myth: “Eat whatever you are craving. After all, you need to take care of yourself.”
Fact: Okay, we all love to give into our cravings, but we should do so in moderation. It is important to keep track of what type of food you eat as it affects the baby. Cravings do not tell you what your body requires. It’s a trap!
