    The best news that you want to hear during pregnancy is that your baby is growing and is healthy. But this can be tough for you back. Most of the pregnant women complain about backache during their second half of pregnancy. The cause of pain is usually the postural changes. Doing exercise during pregnancy can be very helpful and can do wonders and relieve your back pain.

    Causes of back pain:

    • Postural changes - Pregnancy shifts your center of gravity. As a result, you may gradually -- even without noticing -- begin to adjust your posture and the way you move.
    • Lifting heavy weight
    • Overweight
    • Prolong sitting or standing
    • Wearing high heels shoes
    • Muscle spasm
    • Constipation

    Exercise is the best way to relieve the back pain here are some guidelines for exercising:

    • Rest with elevation of the legs to flex the hips may be helpful
    • Resting on a hard bed often relieve the symptoms.
    • Check with your gynecologist before starting exercise.
    • Exercise with a prescription from a physiotherapist on the basis of evaluation.
    • Exercises should not exceed pre-pregnancy capacity.
    • Drink adequate fluids like water, coconut water, juices and light smoothies before, during, and after exercises.
    • Wear loose, comfortable, breathable clothing and supportive shoes.
    • Exercise in well-ventilated area.
    • Start with proper warm up and cool down.
    • Stop exercising if you get pain.
    • Don’t overdo things.

    Exercises should have adequate rest intervals and should be carry out with utmost ease. It helps to get the body back to shape and helps to correct posture during pregnancy. Back is usually normal during pregnancy and there is no need to be worried about. But if you have any of the symptoms mentioned below you should consult your doctor immediately:

    • Severe pain
    • Abrupt pain
    • Cramps
    • Difficulty during micturition

    In some cases, the severe back pain can be a symptom of pregnancy associated osteoporosis. Cramps can be a sign of preterm labor. So, if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms consult your gynecologist immediately.
